    Background Information - Job-specific
Mobilizing the world's capital is essential for the transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy. Today, however, too little capital is supporting the transition, and too much continues to be invested in a high-carbon and resource-intensive, polluting economy. There is an urgent need to accelerate the transition to a green economy by better aligning the financial system to the resilience and the long-term success of the real economy. In this context, the United Nations Environment Progamme's newly launched Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System (Inquiry).
Established in January 2014, the Inquiry produced a final options report as well as technical papers throughout its first 24 month work programme. It mapped current best practice, drew together principles and frameworks, to catalyze new thinking, and ultimately lay out a series of options for advancing a green financial system. Engagement has taken place with a wide range of policy institutions, initiatives focused on green finance and financial market reform, and practitioners across the financial sector and the wider business community, as well as civil society and other actors concerned with the green economy and financial markets.

Following the completion of the two year Inquiry project, UNEP Senior Management took the decision to extend the Inquiry's mandate for a second phase, 2016-2017, in large part due to the very positive response to its findings, its impacts to date, growing calls on it to engage and support further developments, and in particular a request by the Chinese Government to support its establishment of a green finance study group under its G20 Presidency in 2016. The Inquiry's second phase has been designed to further advance the sustainable finance agenda, focusing on: 1. High-level Policy Engagement

    3. Development the Research Agenda
